End of the month: 8 tracks that deserve your attention

Posted

Selected by: Jonathan Holst Bruus, Henrik Koefod Petersen & Adam Emil Schierbeck

For this special edition of our monthly highlights we have focalized on tracks that all connects with the feeling of summer in one way or another. Some of the tracks a new, some are oldies - but nevertheless they're all suitable for the forthcoming season. But before we get into this month's selection - we need to get a few words off of our chests:

We strongly encourage everyone to participate in this crucial moment of change that we’re currently experiencing globally. Internally, we have had long discussions about race and how to properly incorporate more music by non-white musicians in our magazine.

The foundation on which our small music magazine is built; a foundation consisting of art, inspiration, and expression, would not exist if it wasn’t for a non-white culture - however, acknowledging that POC has benefited greatly to the music scene throughout history, is not enough.

We will spend both today and many more days to come learning about being actively anti-racist as white people (and in our case as white men in particular) and we advise you to do the same going forward. Consider using this link for resources that might enlighten you and broaden your horizon:

Black Lives Matter

AceMoMa - Baby Crazy

Cut-up soul samples and heavy breaks from the NYC-based duo AceMoMa, that blends together elements of rave, jungle and house music in a fresh new way while nailing the fundamentals of dance music. Baby Crazy is taken from their recent 'EP2' on Haus of Altr, which follows up their debut album from January entitled A New Dawn.

Holodec - Street Talk (Kelman Duran Remix)

Released on Los Angeles-based record label, Timetable records, 'Street Talk' gets a remix treatment from Kelman Duran, one of the most exciting producers out there at the moment. Duran drives up the tempo of the original from label founder Holodec and transforms it to a slow-paced club tune.

poshisolation · Croatian Amor - Yoyogi Park

Croatian Amor - Yoyogi Park

Close your eyes, take a deep breath, enter a soothing state of mind, locate the nearest beach, and gaze at the sea while you let the surging bubbles of sparkling water enrich your mouth - then you have created the ideal listening setting for Croatian Amor's sizzling new summer track, Yoyogi Park. .

Perfume Genius - On The Floor

We can't greet a summer season properly without a catchy pop tune and in this case, are Perfume Genius' new track On the Floor a worthy candidate. Sleazy guitar licks, longing vocals, and a fairylike string section smoothly carry you through the track, and in the end, you feel like you have entered a world that's beautiful and carefree - just like summer should be.

Björn Isfalt - The Bertel Theme

A dear friend of mine showed me this track a very hot afternoon last year. We had tea on the balcony and the beautiful string intro immediately gave me the goosebumps. I instantly fell in love with the wistfulness of the track – but unfortunately forgot everything about it until I recognized the melody at a local restaurant.

I looked it up and discovered that it originated from an old Swedish film called A Swedish Love Story. The composition is beautifully strange; it's sorrowful, dark and melancholic, but still extremely uplifting. The ideal listening setting would probably be a lovely garden, tasty Champagne, a basket of exotic fruits, and a group of close friends.

Babe Roots - Intro

The two Italian guys that make up the dub (techno) project Babe Roots quickly were able to celebrate the fact that their debut on Paris-based label Linear Movement sold out after its release in 2017. Lucky for both me and you, the French guys from Linear Movement decided to do another press of this anthem-like release full of longing reggae vocals, huge dub chords and steppy drums. And just a slight bit of echo. The track above is simply the intro on the record, a trumpet-filled ambient tune with very clear nods to early dub music.

Motohiko Hamase - Notes of Forestry

Japanese jazz bassist Motohiko Hamase is one of many classical instrumentalists from Japan currently on the rise (again) - partly thanks to their talent and partly thanks to a YouTube algorithm that has boosted early late 80s/early 90s Japanese ambient music quite a bit.
His beautiful, weird and clonky instrumental album from 1988 #Notes of Forestry is seeing a vinyl repress on the label WRWTFWWR - or more commonly known as We Release Whatever The Fuck We Want Records... Lucky for them, the percussive, strange and abstract album is more charming than their name...

Shall Not Fade · TIN004 // Soul Mass Transit System - Tryna Take My Man EP

Soul Mass Transit System - Tryna Take My Man EP

Shall Not Fade is nothing new on the electronic music scene. The UK-based label saw its rise with the lo-fi house music of bedroom producers from around the world a couple of years ago but was also quick to be noticed for their good ear for new talent. This talent has blossomed into releases leaning more towards a both more house-y and techno-y sound and most recently made room for the sub-label Time Is Now heavily focused on UK Garage and breaks - a more rave-y take on UK music. Newest release on Time Is Now comes from notorious Soul Mass Transit System - listen to the four jaw-dropping and floor-ripping tunes above.
