For the sophomore edition of our monthly highlights, we present you with seven tracks from this past month which may, or may not have gone under your radar. Either way, we definitely feel like these tracks are worth another share!
James Massiah - Natural Born Killers (Ride for Me)
Taken from James Massiah's new EP on the London-based record label Levels, Natural Born Killers (Ride With Me) is a slick roller reminiscent of the low-slung Hip-Hop of acts such as Babyfather and TTY, but with a much more dancefloor-oriented packaging. Accompanied with an absolutely stunning visual directed by Ian Pons Jewell, this entire release is definitely worth checking out.
Joe - Get Centered
With earlier releases on infamous club label Hessle Audio, Joe returns with a new one for the eccentric Berlin-label Comemé, and it's definitely a great match. As always with Joe, his highly complex, polyrhythmic club tracks are without a doubt challenging, but at the same time highly satisfying if you allow yourself to delve into them.
When Saints Go Machine - Reflection of You (Bloodshot)
When Saints Go Machine's new single, Reflection of You (Bloodshot) balances perfectly between the catchiness found on earlier material and the more experimental sound the group has moved towards. The single is a great example of a band in constant evolution and with such a teaser, can we only wait in excitement for their new album, So Deep, which will drop November 8th.
Eartheater - High Tide
Experimental artist Eartheater returns with a softer and more pop-orientated sound on her new release, High Tide (which is co-produced with Acemo). The dreamy vocals and the atmospheric synthesizers immediately take you on an emotional journey. While the hard-hitting kicks and the slightly emo bridge-vocals keep up the pace and familiarity of this powerful ballad.
Novelist – Rhythm & Gash
British grime MC Novelist takes on one of the hardest riddims in the history of grime – the old Rebound X instrumental Rhythm & Gash. Both his flow and deliverance on it seem ice cold, making it a perfect banger for months to come – even though it’s a bit cheeky. Nostalgia at its best.
Bailey Ibbs – Pied Piper VIP
On top of the wave of the new garage and 2-step artists sits (among others) Bailey Ibbs. If you haven’t yet checked out his top-shelf productions and tight 2-step drum programming, now’s the time. His new track Pied Piper VIP on Dim Sum Records marks both his talent and understanding of the 00’s genre – and it’s free!
East Man & Walton - Gunshot
First discovered in a Cassius Select Mix, this under-the-radar weightless club track puts grime and techno together at its best. Makes one think of early Mumdance productions but with a heavier emphasis on club-use. Tough programming and laser-synths throughout, this one’s a certified banger.
