End of the month : 8 tracks that deserve your attention
Posted
Selected by: Adam Emil Schierbeck, Henrik Koefod & Sebastian Gabe
It's August and after a few weeks of hibernation we are back with another selection of tracks that deserve your attention. Dive into our list which includes minimal techno, grime, strange pop and even a mysterious metal track. Check it out and remember to share the songs and support the artists - they need it.
Jessy Lanza - Anyone Around
The third single ‘Anyone Around’ is taken from Jessy Lanza’s new album, All The Time, seeing the Canadian electronic pop make a welcomed return with a full-length packed full of great songs about human connection.
Babyfather - Manna (Feat John Glacier & Vegyn)
The king of DIY makes a return with the two tracks AUG Freestyle and Manna, featuring the likes of John Glacier and British producer, Vegyn.
Al Wotton - Witness LP
First LP on UK based label Trule Records sees Al Wootton, aka Deadboy step up from releasing a string of EPs on said label, including the 2019 bomb Body Healthy. On the new album, Witness, the dubby explorations in UK bass music are taken even further away from the clubs than before. Throughout, Witness is a a genuine listening experience and modern excursion through everything from dub and garage to breaks and jungle - and always with the crunch and warmth that can be heard throughout Al Wootton's back catalogue.
‘Agalma V’ - Drew McDowall feat. Kali Malone
For his forthcoming album titled ‘Agalma’, Drew McDowall has teamed up with a group of prominent contemporary experimental artists, including Caterina Barbieri, MSYLMA, Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe and Elvin Brandhi. The first track released on the album is a collaboration with Stockholm-based composer Kali Malone. Agalma V is an eerie and emotive blend of musique concrète, drone and classical instrumentations. According to Dais Records releasing the record, ‘Agalma’ is the former Coil and Psychic TV member’s "least industrial outing to date”. Judge for yourself above. You’ll have to wait till September for the full-length release, though.
‘Lionsblood’ - Duma
Kenyan duo Duma consists of the members Martin Khanja (aka Lord Spike Heart) and Sam Karugu who both have a background in the underground metal scene of Nairobi. Now the two are taking their metal roots and fusing them with electronics on their self-titled debut album released on acclaimed Ugandan label, Nyege Nyege Tapes. The track ‘Lionsblood’ with its pounding percussion and fiery, screamo vocals is a refreshing, noisy addition to the experimental music landscape of 2020.
Logan - Move From We (Prod. RakJay)
The one year old track by up and coming grime MC Logan is finally out on a two-track 12" on Sleeper's label Crucial Recordings. Move From We begins with a quote from Wiley contemplating the question “Is Grime Dead?”. The track was, of course, made before Wiley's complete meltdown and anti-semitic rant on Twitter, but the question still stands - and on top of the blurry and dubby beat, Logan delivers the answer: No.
KO - Untitled (prod. Joy Orbison)
Taken from the end of Joy Orbison's recent Radio 1 Residency on BBC Radio, this one is massive and shows Joy O take on the popular UK rap genre “drill”. Mysterious pads slide along brilliantly on the classic drill syncopations with KO on the microphone and big glides in the 808 basses. No news on a release date for this one unfortunately.
Shinichi Atobe - Lake 3
Usually moving somewhere between minimal techno and deep house, the new record 'Yes' from Shinichi Atobe feature new sounds from the masterful Japanese artist, with ‘Lake 3’ for instance drawing upon dub elements and balearic sounds’
