THE CAVE : POPMIX

Posted

Today, we premiere the first edition of our new series, “The Cave”.

The Cave is all about studio-environment and creative spaces. Once a month we visit a band, group or producer in their respective cave(s) to see how they work and delve in their grottos.

In the outskirts of Nørrebro, Copenhagen, sits Frits Carøe Pedersen, the man behind countless live-shows and DJ-sets in all of Denmark and abroad – under a handful of different aliases. Most recently, he’s released a mellow, trance-y techno roller under the name Wilberforce, but most notoriously, however, is Popmix.

When we enter Popmix’ cave, he turns knobs and buttons on the big 32-channel mixer that also works as a table for his laptop containing hundreds of loops and bleeps of a new project. Quietly he sits and taps his cigarette on the ashtray.

He’s surrounded by big modular synths, homebuilt machines and all sorts of Roland drum machines - and even though it seems like they're all turned on and active with Popmix turning and touching every one of them - the whole vibe seems laidback.

“What I’m most fond of, perhaps, is the light in here. This whole row of windows (to the left) makes so much light enter the studio space. It’s refreshing,” he says while pointing to the blue sky outside.

Music blasts through the speakers behind the big mixer and with excitement in his eyes, he crawls underneath the table to turn on the subwoofer.

“Let’s feel it in our chests,” he says.

We sit silently for a while and listen to some of his new demos. And especially the bass-end of these, obviously. Popmix leaves his chair and stands. A ray of late-august sun strikes his face.

“Let’s get a beer,” he says as he turns and faces the window, closing the curtains. His face is completely submerged in the light from the sun until the curtain is shut.

The studio turns dark as Popmix leaves the room. He goes out into the light and will return, once the air and light have made him focused and inspired again.
